Award Ceremony

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at IUPUI annually sponsors a High School Mathematics Contest. Throughout Indiana, hundreds of high school students work through a series of math problems during the early spring. These students study patterns, analyze relationships, draft and refine their solutions, and finally submit their work to the IUPUI Department of Mathematical Sciences as part of the IUPUI High School Math Contest. Many high school teachers use this as an opportunity to supplement their own lesson plans and provide students with creative and competitive outlets.

Description

Every year, the five contest questions and a poster highlighting the contest theme are emailed to all Indiana high schools and posted on this website. The questions are chosen so that all high school students—from freshmen through seniors—are able to utilize their math problem-solving skills. Every year, one question consists of an essay about an application of mathematics as it relates to the contest theme. Students work on the questions independently and mail in their solutions.

IUPUI faculty and graduate students volunteer over one hundred hours to judge all entries based on the student's method of finding the solution, correctness, and elegance of solution. Participants are invited to campus for the award ceremony in April.
