Admissions

The graduate programs in the Department of Earth Sciences at IUPUI offer students unparalleled opportunities to work closely with faculty mentors on research that crosses traditional science boundaries and facilitates broad-based scientific decision-making.

Our research programs cross the spectrum of the earth sciences--and the globe. Our researchers have strong connections with the Center for Earth and Environmental Sciences and the Center for Urban Health, both Signature Centers on the IUPUI campus as well as with faculty from throughout the School of Science, the School of Engineering, the IU School of Medicine and the IU School of Dentistry.

Admissions Requirements Vary by Degree Program

Master of Science in Geology

Prospective students should have a bachelor's degree in geology, including a summer field course, and a minimum of a B (3.0) average in geology courses. One year of chemistry and mathematics through college algebra and trigonometry are required. Individuals with a bachelor's degree in another area of science are also encouraged to apply; the departmental graduate advisory committee will prescribe a plan of study to remove deficiencies. The Graduate Record Examination General Test is required. Each student must submit three letters of recommendation.

Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Earth Sciences

Prospective students should have a B.S. or M.S. degree in the physical, biological, or health sciences, and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher is expected.  The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test is required.  Individuals for whom English is a second language must demonstrate proficiency in English.  Scores from the TOEFL exam should be submitted with the application for admission.  Each student must submit three letters of recommendation.

International Students

If English is not your native language, you must demonstrate proficiency in English before you can be admitted to IUPUI. Learn more

  1. Transcripts: Official transcripts from every college attended sent directly from your school to our department - 2 Transcripts Per College. Secure, certified official digital transcripts sent from your University accepted! 
  2. Letters of Recommendation: Three confidential letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation should be provided by professionals (consider faculty members, administrators, internship/co-operative education supervisors, and employers.) who are familiar with the applicant's work and strengths. The recommendation form may be submitted by the recommenders through the online application or mail. Download the Recommendation Form if you plan to submit your letters by mail.
  3. Exams (GRE & TOEFL): GRE and/or English language proficiency scores mailed directly to us from Educational Testing Service.
