After several rounds of intense competition, Carmel High School Junior Akshay Kumar was crowned the champion of the third annual Indianapolis Brain Bee on Saturday, February 5th, 2012, at IUPUI. Modeled after a traditional spelling bee, the Brain Bee is a live question and answer competition in which students are quizzed about the human brain and central nervous system
As a part of winning the third annual Indianapolis Brain Bee, Kumar was awarded a Dean’s scholarship to IUPUI and will receive an expense-paid trip for two to compete in the National Brain Bee competition at the University of Maryland, Baltimore March 4th-5th. There he will compete against winners of the 43 other local Brain Bee competitions for the title of National Brain Bee Champion.
Two other students from Carmel High School were also recognized for their accomplishments. Harsha Vemuri and Rui Tong were runners-up at this contest. This day was about more than just the competition; the students visited with current IUPUI psychology students who constructed poster displays summarizing the research they are conducting at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
