Dr. Ryan Denton, Chemistry, IUPUIDr. Ryan Denton, academic specialist in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, in collaboration with Rob Elliott from the Department of Computer, Information and Leadership Technology, was recently awarded a Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Institute (MURI) grant for the 2011-2012 academic year. This program is designed to encourage multidisciplinary undergraduate student research on real-world problems to gain research skills that can be applied to their college coursework and future careers.

The award provides $1200 stipends for four undergraduate students studying either chemistry, chemical education, information technology, or informatics, in addition to faculty stipends of $500. Students will perform 120 hours of research over the fall and spring semesters and will present their research at a poster session and/or conference.

Denton's research involves understanding the impact of online learning tools on students in organic chemistry in order to pursue active learning methods in the classroom. His research project entitled "Development and Implementation of Collaborative Knowledge Base Software in the First-Semester Organic Chemistry Lecture" will provide a valuable interactive learning tool to students as well as create a faculty tool for understanding student needs and performance.
