Registration Now Open For Third Annual Brain Bee At IUPUI
Nov 16 2011
High School Student Competitors Can Earn Title of Indiana’s Brain Bee Champ
The Department of Psychology and the School of Science at Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) will host the third annual Indiana Brain Bee competition for high school students on Saturday, January 21, 2012. Open to students in grades 9-12, contestants in this spelling-bee style event answer questions about the brain.
Like a spelling bee, each student, in turn, will be asked questions on the brain and nervous system. After three questions are answered incorrectly the student will be asked to be seated and they will not be asked further questions. The Brain Bee will continue until a single student remains, having answered all of his/her questions correctly. In addition to a $2000 scholarship to IUPUI, the first place winner of the IUPUI Brain Bee will receive an expense-paid trip for two to compete in the National Brain Bee competition held in the spring.
A free study guide is available from the Society for Neuroscience.

“We are extremely pleased to be hosting the Brain Bee at IUPUI,” said Bethany Neal-Beliveau, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology and organizer of the event. “The Brain Bee competition is a great opportunity for high students to learn more about the science of the brain and expose themselves to more difficult reading materials than they may find in their high schools.”
The IUPUI Brain Bee contest is one of many scheduled in the United States and throughout the world leading up to the International Brain Bee, which aims to motivate young people to learn about the brain, capture their imagination and inspire them to pursue careers in brain-related fields. There are currently about 70 local Brain Bee coordinators worldwide that conduct competitions annually. The winner of each local Bee is invited to attend a National Brain Bee competition in his or her own country, and the winner of each National Bee is invited to compete in the International Brain Bee Championship.
The IUPUI Department of Psychology sponsors the local Brain Bee as part of the School of Science’s commitment to advancing scientific minds, and fostering community interest in the sciences. The Department of Psychology is recognized nationally and internationally for its world class research, teaching and service activities.
The School of Science is committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service in the biological, physical, behavioral and mathematical sciences. The School is dedicated to being a leading resource for interdisciplinary research and science education in support of Indiana's effort to expand and diversify its economy.
