School of Science at IUPUI Honors Bart Ng for over 36 Years of Service
Sep 19 2011
A program and reception honoring Bart Ng, Ph.D., dean emeritus from the School of Science at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), will be held on September 23, 2011 at the Eugene & Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center in downtown Indianapolis. The celebration will begin at 5pm with a message from IU President Michael McRobbie and include a musical program and remarks from colleagues and students. A post-reception dinner will be held at Mesh. Registration for both events is available online at www.science.iupui.edu/bartrsvp .
In honor of Ng’s service to the students at IUPUI, the School of Science has set a goal of securing RISE scholarships supporting research, international, service learning, and experiential learning experiences for science majors at IUPUI, and funds to support excellence in graduate study in the School of Science. To date, over $100,000 has been pledged in honor of Dr. Ng’s retirement. Inquiries regarding RISE scholarships or support for excellence in graduate studies for science majors can be directed to Anne Marie Chastain at 317-278-1051.
As Acting Dean of the School of Science, Dr. Ng cultivated an environment that promotes the pursuit of academic excellence, cutting-edge research, and innovative collaboration in the lab, classroom and community. Over the past three years, the School has recruited 39 new tenure-track faculty and seen significant increases in external research funding as well as a 28% increase in science majors. Ng has been able to secure campus and community support whose impact will be felt for years to come. For instance, in the Fall of 2011, the School will break ground on the first phase of a new Science and Engineering Laboratory Building, which includes 45,000 square feet of research and teaching labs as well as vivarium facilities.
Throughout his career Ng has been a champion for student engagement. By expanding services and programs, including freshman learning communities, internship opportunities and research experiences, he has increased support for and access to international study, internships, service-learning and undergraduate and graduate research in the School of Science.
Ng joined the Department of Mathematical Sciences at IUPUI in 1975 and served as chair of the department from 1986 to 1997. He became a member of the Founding Faculty of University College at IUPUI in 1997, and was appointed M. L. Bittinger Professor of Mathematics in 2004. In 2008 Ng was named acting dean for the School of Science. Ng is retiring from IUPUI on September 30, 2011. He has been named the dean of the College of Science at Benedictine University.
The School of Science at IUPUI is committed to excellence in teaching, research and service in the biological, physical, behavioral and mathematical sciences. The School is dedicated to being a leading resource for interdisciplinary research and science education in support of Indiana's effort to expand and diversify its economy.
