In this newly created position, Dr. Lees will work with the dean in allocation of faculty, staff, and other personnel lines and financial, facility, and program resources. He will also assist with annual budget planning and assessment as well as fiscal policy development.

“IUPUI was formed in 1969, just four years before I arrived. I chose to come to the School of Science at IUPUI because I believed it was a place where I could play a role in building of a potentially great urban university,” said Dr. Lees. “In recent years, the School has undergone a transformation. We’ve seen significant growth in the strength of our programs,  the quality of our students and in our ability to attract excellent faculty. With Central Indiana’s need for graduates who are skilled in the life, health and technology industries, I am certain that the School’s upward trajectory will continue and am excited to be a part of it."

"The School of Science at IUPUI has benefited tremendously from Doug Lees’ leadership over nearly two decades,” said Bart S. Ng, Ph.D., acting dean of the School of Science. “With his experience and knowledge, Dr. Lees will be a great resource to the incoming dean during this time of transition.”

Dr. Ng is retiring from IUPUI on September 30, 2011.

Lees joined the faculty of the School of Science in 1973 with a doctoral degree in microbiology and currently holds the rank of professor. He served as biology department chair from 1992 until September 2010. During his 18 years at the helm, the biology department saw a four-fold increase in number of undergraduate majors, a significant expansion in graduate degrees earned, growth to 25 faculty members and major growth in external funding.

Simon Rhodes, Ph.D., has been appointed dean of the School of Science.  Rhodes, associate dean for research and graduate studies in the IU School of Medicine as well as professor of cellular and integrative physiology and biochemistry and molecular biology, will assume his new position July 1, 2011.

"Over the past several years, the School of Science has laid the foundation for excellence, and we want to sustain this momentum moving forward,” said Dr. Rhodes. “We are extremely lucky to have somebody of Dr. Lees' knowledge, experience and vision to help consolidate the gains the School has made and to assist in building the necessary infrastructure to ensure the School’s place as an urban leader in science education and research."

The School of Science at IUPUI is committed to excellence in teaching, research and service in the biological, physical, behavioral and mathematical sciences. The School is dedicated to being a leading resource for interdisciplinary research and science education in support of Indiana's effort to expand and diversify its economy.
