Students Networking at the Science Scholars Celebration 2012The School of Science at IUPUI recently recognized several hundred students who earned a spot on the Dean’s or Scholar’s List for 2011-2012.

All the students honored at the event had achieved at least a 3.5 GPA (Dean’s List) or 3.75 GPA (Scholar’s List). The annual Science Scholars Celebration also served to thank parents who supported the success of current students and welcome incoming freshman set to begin in the fall.

“The School of Science at IUPUI can offer you invaluable experiences in the classroom, but there is so much more,” said Dean Simon Rhodes. “Through research and internship opportunities, you will gain the skills to best position yourself in an outstanding way for your careers, for graduate schools or professional schools.”

Dr. Uday Sukhatme, a professor physics and Vice Chancellor of Research for IUPUI, reminded the attendants that the School is “Indiana’s premier research institution” and a benchmark for others to follow.

“We are involved in some innovative changes at the school, changes that others in higher education should be watching. You’re in a good place,” Sukhatme said.

Student Tomas Meijome, a biophysics major, agreed, adding the level of research opportunities available for students at IUPUI are impressive and life changing.

“I was truly amazed to be involved in something so complex so early on,” said Meijome, who is now researching cell biology in orthopedics. He will attend the prestigious New York University School of Medicine research program this summer.

Meijome also offered one bit of advice for new students preparing to begin at the School of Science: “Remember that your career starts your first semester at IUPUI.”
