Current Research

My program of research focuses on risk for substance use and problems among African Americans. Research has shown that comparative to European American (a) African Americans tend to report lower rates of alcohol used based on both age and gender, (b) African American adolescents report lower rates of use and later initiation of drinking, (c) African Americans who attend college report lower rates of drinking and binge drinking, and (d) African Americans report higher rates of abstinence across all age groups. Yet, paradoxically, African Americans appear to experience more problems from use compared to European Americans. My research focuses on examining within-group variation in substance use among African Americans with the hope of understanding whether particular subgroups of African Americans are at heightened risk of engaging in problematic drinking behaviors and related problems. The ultimate goal of my research is to develop interventions to mitigate this risk process across development.

Dr. Zapolski is currently accepting new students for enrollment in Fall 2014.
