New prevention target: IUPUI studies effect of depression treatment on heart attack risk
INDIANAPOLIS – Depressed adults are at high risk of cardiovascular disease, the number one killer of both men and women in the United States
"In previous studies, we have found intriguing positive evidence that managing depression lowers risk of future heart attacks and strokes," said Stewart, associate professor of psychology and an affiliated scientist of the IU Center for Aging Research. "With this new NIH-funded clinical trial, we hope to confirm that treatment of depression is cardioprotective, lowering the risk of developing cardiovascular disease."
Atkinson to lead IUPUI Research Office
INDIANAPOLIS -- Atkinson will serve as interim vice chancellor for up to two years, during which time IUPUI will launch a national search for this critical position. He succeeds Kody Varahramyan, who will step down Aug. 16 to serve as senior aide to the chancellor.
Gabriel Filippelli named 2015 Fellow for International Association of GeoChemistry
INDIANAPOLIS -- This honorary title is bestowed annually to up to two scientists who have made significant contributions to the field of geochemistry. Filippelli was the only Fellow named for 2015.
Filippelli joined the Department of Earth Sciences at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) in 1994. He is recognized as an international authority in the interdisciplinary field of earth sciences and human health.

IUPUI will help U.S. State Department develop policy solutions through Diplomacy Lab
INDIANAPOLIS -- The effort is part of the State Department’s Diplomacy Lab, a program in which faculty and students develop ideas and solutions to policy issues identified by the federal agency.
Launched by Secretary of State John Kerry in 2013, Diplomacy Lab is seeking additional university partners. IUPUI’s application was recently approved.
